Youbet - Building a Challenger Brand for the Danish Betting Market

Owned by Danske Spil, Youbet was launched in 2018 with an ambitious mission: to challenge international giants like bet365 and Unibet by offering deeper live betting, higher odds, and a more transparent experience for serious bettors.
Quick Summary
Led brand identity and full digital platform design for Youbet, Danske Spil’s challenger to bet365 and Unibet. Created a data-first UX for serious bettors across app and website, balancing credibility with fast live-bet decisions. Result: +33% live engagement, +28% faster bet placement, +24% MAU, –31% support cases, 4.4★ app rating.
This was a true high-stakes project. Danske Spil was losing market share to foreign competitors, and Youbet was conceived as the strategic response—a modern, agile brand built to win back Danish players who wanted more sophisticated live betting and casino experiences. The platform would operate separately from Oddset, powered by SBTech, and deliver around 20,000 live events per month, cash-out features, and a dedicated Danish live casino.
With my background in branding, complex digital platforms, and decades as a sports-betting enthusiast, I was uniquely positioned to translate this business ambition into a credible, competitive product. I understood not only how to design interfaces, but how bettors think, decide, and engage in real time.
A crucial foundation for the project was a deep understanding of the “heavy betting” segment—experienced players who engage daily, follow multiple leagues, and make decisions based on margins, form, and live data rather than emotion. This audience doesn’t respond to flashy promotions or casual entertainment cues; they seek information density, speed, and credibility.
For this reason, the visual and UX direction deliberately moved toward a darker, more professional profile. The interface needed to feel like a trading terminal rather than a game—prioritizing contrast, legibility, and rapid scanning of odds movements. Data-heavy communication became the core design principle:
- Clear hierarchy for live odds and market depth
- Compact layouts supporting multi-match monitoring
- Visual language inspired by financial dashboards
- Minimal decorative elements, maximum informational value
This approach signaled that Youbet was built for serious bettors, aligning perfectly with Danske Spil’s ambition to attract players from international operators who were accustomed to advanced tools and higher odds.

- Create a distinct challenger brand under the Danske Spil umbrella
- Design a scalable identity that could compete with global bookmakers
- Develop a full digital ecosystem: responsive website and native app
- Communicate trust, transparency, and excitement without aggressive bonus tactics
- Present complex live-betting data in a fast, intuitive interface
From day one, the goal was to position Youbet as the intelligent alternative - a platform for players who wanted depth rather than noise.

The creative platform for Youbet was built around a simple, human-centered idea: “You + action.”
We took the everyday behaviors of bettors - you win, you analyse, you try, you lose - and turned them into a flexible narrative framework that could live across every touchpoint. The concept shaped everything from print ads with headlines like “You begin – with a bonus deposit of 100% up to 1000 kr” to prime-time TV commercials broadcast nationally during halftime in the Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, and the Danish Superleague. The films followed the rhythm of a bettor’s life - you bet, you live, you die, you love, you hate, you laugh, you sleep, you party, you lose, you win - before landing on the simple, definitive line: “You bet,” introducing the product on a smart device. By anchoring the brand in this direct second-person voice, we created a concept that was both emotionally relatable and endlessly adaptable across formats and messages.
The identity concept I developed for Youbet was centered around the use of leet speak - the modified “1337” language where letters are replaced with numbers and symbols (E=3, A=4, T=7, S=$). The idea resonated perfectly with the core audience: the elite, heavy bettor segment, for whom this visual language already carried cultural meaning from gaming and hacker communities. Rather than using leet speak as a gimmick, we applied it subtly and strategically across touchpoints, allowing the brand to signal insider credibility without sacrificing readability. Because communication was primarily digital, the logotype could come alive through motion - most notably by flipping the letter B in YOUBET into the number 3, transforming it into YOU3ET. This dynamic treatment gave the identity a distinctive edge, reinforcing the idea of belonging to an “elite” community while keeping the brand flexible and modern.
I developed:
- A complete brand identity system: logo, color, typography, tone of voice
- A digital design language optimized for live odds and fast decisions
- Modular UI components for betting slips, markets, and cash-out flows
- A visual framework balancing Danish credibility with international energy
The platform design prioritized:
- Instant overview of live markets
- Clear odds comparison
- Frictionless bet placement
- Transparent account and payout experience
- Seamless transition between sportsbook and live casino
Working closely with Danske Spil stakeholders and SBTech platform specialists, I ensured the design translated business requirements into real user advantage - speed, clarity, and confidence at the moment of betting.
